A pig’s life, Laos

Animal-lovers look away. I was riding in this truck from a village in northern Laos to Phonsavan, to visit the Plain of Jars. We stopped for a break and everyone got out to stretch their legs. Meanwhile, a couple of people wanted to board with two pot-bellied pigs (which in Laos they just call “pigs”). The pigs’ owner and the truck driver picked up the poor piggies by the ears and tails – which the pigs did not like at all, if their screams were any indication. Have you ever heard a pig scream? It’s horrifying – and unceremoniously swung them onto the running board, where they trussed them up. The worst part? In order to get back into the truck, we all had to step on the pigs. I felt soooooo bad.
