Viva la bicicleta, Ometepe

On the serene and beautiful Nicaraguan island of Ometepe, cars are scarce – one of the island’s many charms. People usually get around on bikes, or by bus. And on foot. Sometimes on horseback. Anyway, this woman is doubling her son on her bike. I was doubled on many a bike, too, in Nicaragua, and I loved it. I hadn’t been doubled since I was a kid. Like riding in the back of a pick-up truck (also tons of fun), this became verboten in Canada long ago. The way things are going, soon it’ll be illegal to cross the street without putting on a helmet first. Sigh.
